Frequently Asked Questions

After 30 years practising at his Main Street Denture Clinic in Mornington, David Ayton is always asked many questions relating to dentures and denture care. Below you will find the answers to some of the more frequently asked questions.

What is a denture?

A denture is a replacement for a missing tooth or teeth.

How long does a denture last?
A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture.
How much do dentures cost?

As there are many different types of dentures, the cost will depend on the type that you require. Making and fitting individual precision-made dentures is a very labour-intensive and specialised task. At your initial free consultation, we will assess your needs and discuss the options available to you along with answering any questions or concerns you may have. All costs will be advised before commencing any treatment.

Can I claim a health fund refund rebate on dentures?

If your dental cover is included in your current private health fund you should be able to claim a rebate. We offer Hicaps direct claiming, meaning if you have cover you simply pay the gap, we do the rest. We can also give accurate quotes from your health fund. You will find we can simplify understanding the way your health fund works.

Will dentures affect what I eat?
At first, new dentures will affect your ability to eat, as well as chew certain foods. As with anything new it will take time to get used to. As you become more accustomed to your dentures eating will become easier.
Will dentures affect how I speak?

At first, with new dentures you may have some minor difficulty saying some words, usually this is just for a few days. If enunciating is practised, most issues can be overcome in a few hours.

How do I clean my dentures?
To clean your dentures, you can use soap and water using a toothbrush. Do not use toothpaste as it will damage your denture.
Can you copy my old dentures or a photo?
Yes. We can accurately measure old dentures, set and arrange teeth accordingly. We can also copy teeth arrangements from a photo. The final appearance can be as similar or as different as you choose.
